Osteoarthritis is a very serious disease of modern world that causes deterioration of cartilage (soft bone) in the joints. It could start with a mild stiffness, mildly swollen and cracking joints and joint pain. It affects men and women equally. It affects every joint in the body including the knees, neck and lower back. The main factor responsible for the development of this disease is continuous degeneration of weight bearing joints such as knees and hips due to excessive activity, weight and trauma.
How joints are damaged?
Cartilages are soft bones that cover the ends of our bones and act as a cushion between the joint bones. These are primarily made up of Collagen Fibers, Glycoproteins and proteoglycans. As cartilage is the body tissue, it is constantly made and broken down in our body. For healthy joints there should be a balance between the rate of formation of cartilage and its degeneration. When the rate of degeneration of cartilage becomes more as compared to rate of formation, it results in loss of cartilage and hence causes osteoarthritis. This results in pain and inflammation in joints.
Cause of Osteoarthritis:-
Latest medical researches have shown following causes of osteoarthritis:-
1.) In the patients of osteoarthritis a special kind of protein called cytokines is present in high concentration. This is the most leading cause of deterioration of cartilage in joints. Cytokines control an enzyme called protease that has inflammation creating properties. This enzyme cause breakdown of proteins presents in joints and hence cause inflammation.
2.) Another important cause of inflammation in weight bearing joints is a constant process of putting pressure on joints and then releasing it. When we do any body activity such as walking and running our body weight puts pressure on the damaged joints and stop the flow of blood to joints by blocking the blood vessels. When this pressure is released the blood starts to flow. The regular blockage and release of blood to body joints cause damage and inflammation in joints.
Most of the doctors or physicians focus on the treatment of symptoms of osteoarthritis rather than its root cause i.e. they focus primarily on treatment of pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. But this approach has completely failed. For instance, doctors usually prescribe pain killers and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to patients to give them relief from pain and swelling. The reason behind such approach may be economical or lack of knowledge. But, I don’t want to go in detail in this issue. The pain killers/NSAIDs can reduce pain and swelling in joints for a limited period, so patients have to take them on daily basis to keep there normal life going on. The regular use of pain killers/NSAIDs causes various side effects in our body like stomach ulcers and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. So, it is not advisable to take NSAIDs as treatment of osteoarthritis on regular basis.
Treatment of Root cause of disease:-
Now, two questions arise in our mind that if taking NSAIDs is not real treatment of this disease then what is its real treatment? Second is, whether any true and effective method to treat this disease exists? Good news is that there is a treatment of this disease. Advanced medical researches have revealed that the real culprit behind this disease is the attack of free radicals on the joints. These free radicals are constantly produced in the body during oxidation of food due to oxidative stress. To know more about oxidative stress you can go to my website atozhealth.tripod.com. Free Radicals are produced in more quantity in those persons who are deficient in Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and several other minerals and antioxidants. We can say that those persons who eat unhealthy and unbalanced diet full of only calories are more prone to this disease.
Thus osteoarthritis can be cured by changing eating habits and taking a well potent diet full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. For that you need to supplement your nutrition level by taking vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in the form of pure and organic food supplements. Also, doing regular and proper exercise helps in curing this disease.
It is an amino sugar that acts as a building block of a healthy joint. It is responsible for the synthesis of cartilage. Latest studies have shown that unlike NSAIDs, Glucosamine helps the body to rebuild the damaged cartilage and gives relief from pain. These studies has shown significant health benefits for osteoarthritis patients who take Glucosamine HCl supplements 1500-2000 mg/day, with no side effects on their body.
Calcium and Magnesium
Strong bones and healthy joints need a strong support of calcium and magnesium. Calcium and magnesium enhances each others absorption and utilization in the body. A patient of osteoarthritis should take 800-1500 mg of calcium and about 450 mg of magnesium on daily basis. Magnesium helps in absorption of Vitamin D and calcium in our body.
Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium in the bones. It can be produced in the skin by sunlight or can be taken orally in the form of supplements.
Also taking Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, Boron and Manganese on daily basis for cure of osteoarthritis is necessary.
